If you click onto the Phone History on the Dashboard (see screenshot below in red) and it will not click into a contacts record this is because there is no contact associated to the phone number.  

If the number is for a new client then you will need to create a new contact record and then add in the number.  Next time the client calls it will show their name on the Dashboard and also allow you to click in as it is now associated to a contact record.

Please note: This issue will occur if the phone number that has been dialled out or an incoming call received in that has not stored against a contact record in the database.

The number called needs to relate to a contact record and be correctly stored as a phone number or mobile number against the contacts record.
