Set the default email app on your Mac so that when you click a link for an email address your Mac opens the email app that you have set up as the default for a mailto link.

When you first set up your Mac, OS X sets Safari as the default browser for website links and Mail as the default email app. When you install other email and web apps, these settings might change. You can set which app you want to open when you click a link.

Choose your default email application

Use these steps to choose which app opens when you click an email link.

  1. Open MailĀ from the Applications folder, Dock, or Launchpad.
  2. From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
  3. Click the General button.
  4. Choose your desired default email application from the "Default email reader" pop up.
